We are done with the bronchoscopy and they found . . . nothing. BUT, this was pretty much the best result. The best guess as to why he is coughing up some blood is that the cancer in his lungs is actually dying. So in a literal sense, he is coughing up cancer? This is probably combined with a severely irritated throat from all the coughing and a bit of a sinus infection and the odds were just against him. But at least we know with certainty now that his lungs are relatively healthy. All the cancer that remains is low in the lung, small and toward the exterior which is where it can do the least damage. Yay!
We also learned today that they are investing the fact that maybe Mike has a little blood clotting disorder that has always been there but has never caused problems so it went undetected. No matter how much vitamin K they give him he still doesn't clot super well which is probably contributing to the bleeding in the lungs as well. It also didn't help him any when he was here with a bleeding problem during our last hospital stay. His cancer "angio" sarcoma is a vascular cancer which means that it can cause a lot of bleeding.
From here we are hoping to knock out chemotherapy in the morning and get home but there are never any guarantees. We should have a better idea after the doctor rounds in the morning! My Mom is at our house in Swansboro with baby Audrey and I am dying to snuggle and smell her (the baby not my Mom). That may sound weird but I kid you not, that baby smells delicious!!
